Showcasing homegrown talent part of 2014 Juno bid

Saanich contributes $100,000 toward Juno music award bid
By Kim Westad, April 24, 2012

Saanich will contribute $100,000 toward a regional bid to host the Juno music awards in 2014.

The council voted unanimously in favour of the contribution.

“It’s the largest municipal council contribution to the bid, a reflection of Saanich being the largest municipality in the region,” Coun. Dean Murdock said Tuesday.

While most of the Juno activities would be in the downtown core at the Save-On Arena, there will be an economic boost for the region as a whole hosting the national event, he said.

As well, Murdock wasn’t shy in pointing out that major Canadian talents such as David Foster and Nellie Furtado come from Saanich.

“The view was this is an opportunity to showcase homegrown talent. We’re sure there will be many more homegrown talents we’ll be celebrating in the future.”

The Juno bid committee has a $1.5-million commitment from the province, if it can raise another $450,000 from area municipalities.

The committee has received support from Victoria, Colwood, Langford, Sooke and Esquimalt as well.

The bid deadline is April 30.

Saanich Council has voted to commit $100 000 to Greater Victoria’s bid for the 2014 Juno awards.

Saanich Councillor Dean Murdock says their financial commitment comes after the bid committee approached municipalities for financial support

“the committee, the bid committee has gone out to other communities in the region, seeking about a dollar per person from each community, and a number of communities have expressed support and Saanich has put a number to that and that’s $100 000, which is, outside of the City of Victoria, it’s the largest contribution toward the bid”

Murdock says Saanich serves to benefit from the Juno Awards with the possibility of hosting an event during the week long awards festival.

Esquimalt Council also voted to financially support the bid Monday night.

David Hurford, who is a director with the Capital Region Music Award Society, spoke to CTV News from Esquimalt Municipal Hall.

Hurford says other municipalities have already made commitments to the bid.

“we have received support from Victoria, which was obviously critical because most of the venues and the events will take place in Victoria. We have received support from Colwood, Langford, now Esquimalt, and certainly we’ve talked to all the municipalities and they’ve been quite supportive so we expect that we’ll see others coming forward in the coming days as we follow up with the provincial government on their request to get municipal support”

Sooke has also voted to support the bid. The bid submission deadline is April 30th.

SAANICH IS SUPPORTIVE OF A GREATER VICTORIA BID TO HOST A JUNO AWARDS CEREMONY, BUT IS NOT READY TO SIGN TO A BLANK CHEQUE TO HELP PAY FOR IT.

THE QUESTION WAS A LATE ADDITION TO THE AGENDA FOR A COUNCIL BUDGET SESSION IN SAANICH.
MAYOR FRANK LEONARD WAS TROUBLED BY THE SHORT NOTICE…HIS COUNTERPART IN VICTORIA ASKED HIM FOR A DECISION BY THURSDAY OF THIS WEEK. NEITHER LEONARD NOT ANY OF HIS COUNCILLORS WAS READY TO MOVE THAT QUICKLY.
DEAN MURDOCK…

“I think it’s a significant event, it’s a great opportunity. I’d like to see us make a motion of support for the event with the caveat that we are prepared to talk about money but we can’t commit to anything at this point…well, talk about resource support”

THE VICTORIA BID COMMITTEE SAID IT WOULD HAVE TO BE A REGIONAL INITIATIVE, WHEN IT ANNOUNCED ITS INTENTION TO APPLY.
