Craigflower bridge consultation not up to Saanich’s standards

Six month closure of Craigflower Bridge approved by Saanich
February 6, 2012 CFAX 1070

Saanich Council approved a six month closure of the Craigflower Bridge at their meeting Monday night.

The closure will allow construction of a new, replacement bridge. Councillor Dean Murdock says the majority of Saanich residents wanted a six month closure of the bridge rather than an 18 month partial closure.

“What we heard was of the hundreds of residents they spoke to, only three supported the eighteen month [partial] closure.”

The bridge is owned by Saanich and View Royal. View Royal already voted in favour of a six month closure.

A three lane design concept for the bridge was also approved at the meeting. Murdock was the lone councillor not in favour. He says he thinks the public engagement process for the design concept was inadequate.

The project will now move into a final design phase.
